The Jefferson Historical Society & Museum has multiple projects underway to make a visitor's experience even better. Listed below are some of the projects that we're currently working on.
|
Our building was constructed in 1888 - 1890 as a Federal Courthouse and Post Office in Jefferson, Texas. In 1961 the building was closed by the Federal Government. The Jefferson Historical Society purchased the building in 1965 to serve as a home for the museum.
|
For many years, access to the museum was restricted to some visitors due to the numerous stairs. We are proud to announce that an entry ramp and an elevator have been installed and are ready for use - the museum is now accessible to everyone!
Plaster and Paint Project
Now that the elevator is operational, our 1890 building needs new plaster and paint. We are currently seeking grants and donations to preserve the museum.
Digitalizing the collections
Currently the collections housed in the Museum are being entered in a digital catalogue. This will allow patrons to locate information and objects with a few strokes of a keyboard.
We have a Story to Tell
|
The history of Jefferson is a fascinating story which the museum will tell in a new first-floor exhibit. It will cover the years from the Steamboat days, to the falling of the river, to the current status as "B&B Capital of Texas." Although still in the planning phases, this new exhibit will be an exciting addition to the museum.
