War on the Periphery of the Trans-Mississippi

We're already planning an exciting symposium, and we're delighted to announce our all-star slate of distinguished speakers and their presentations:

  • William Bozic, a NPS Park Guide at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park will present "The Great Drowning of March 1864." It involved an exciting race to safety on the Texas Gulf Coast.
  • M. Jane Johansson, Ph.D., is a retired professor of history who will present "A Constant School of Excitement: Albert C. Ellithorpe and the War in the Border Region." Albert C. Ellithorpe, a Union officer, served in the First Indian Home Guards, a tri-racial unit comprised of whites, refugee Muscogee Creek and Seminole Indians, and African Americans. Traditional campaigning and guerrilla warfare in the border region of Arkansas, Indian Territory, and Missouri, along with the role of Indian troops, the plight of refugees, and the internal problems of the Army of the Frontier will be explored through the lens of Ellithorpe’s diary and newspaper articles.
  • Steven M. Mayeux, a retired Central Louisiana agricultural consultant, historian and former Marine tank officer will present "Earthen Walls, Iron Men: Fort DeRussy, Louisiana, and the Defense of Red River." In addition to covering the history of the fort, the presentation will also update us on attempts by the local community, the American Battlefield Trust, and the Red River Waterway Commission to have the site developed by the Louisiana Office of State Parks.
  • Henry O. Robertson, Ph.D. is a professor of history at Louisiana Christian University who will present, "Texas Fury and Union Ruination: The Battle of Bayou Bourbeux, 1863." His presentation will explain the success of the furious attack by Texas soldiers and subsequent collapse of Union forces that led to the demise of the Union’s autumn 1863 campaign in Louisiana.
More information - including the registration form - will be coming soon. Meanwhile, mark your calendar for August 3, 2024!
